Ani Mari + Heather Lynn + Modern Friendship

Alt-Americana singer-songwriter Ani Mari’s debut solo album, girlfriend (produced by Erik Koskinen and Real-Phonic Records, 2023), explores the ambiguities of coming of age in a beautifully precarious world. Across ten warmly combative tracks, she fights for grace and connection amidst the anxieties, desires, heartbreaks, and joie de vivre of being young in America’s heartland. Tracks like “Whitefish Bay” and “The Prettiest Things” echo the forests and waters of the Upper Peninsula and the bluegrass and folk influences Ani grew up immersed in, while title track “Girlfriend” triangulates her current temperature somewhere between Liz Phair, Waxahachee, and Ratboys. Comparisons, however, always fall short. Compelling, humming, and hungry, Ani’s indie-folk songwriting is 100% her own, and definitely not to be missed.

Raised in the Northwoods of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, Ani began performing and recording with her folk duo, Ani & Kora, when she was just 12 years old. Now based out of Ann Arbor, she frequents historical venues such as The Ark and The Blind Pig and tours both regionally and nationally with her backing band.

Heather Lynn is an artist from the Blue Ridge of Virginia, based in Portland, Maine. Weaving dynamic vocals and fingerstyle guitar, she creates gritty melodies rooted in folk and rock sounds. Her lyrics echo childhood memories and the harsh but beautiful world surrounding. “Narrows”, her debut release, features seven original songs recorded in living rooms across Boston as well as Chillhouse Studios. The tracks move from powerful rock anthems to pining acoustic tunes. Through her music she hopes to peek over the walls growing taller around us all.

Modern Friendship is a Portland, Maine-based band whose material ranges sonically from guitar-driven indie rock to stomping acoustic romps. The band's material lyrically echoes the melancholy of young adulthood, love made, love lost, and friendship in between. Their latest offering is reverberant, layered and sparkling, complimented by glitching shoegaze lead guitar and background vocal harmony from the band. Branca’s emotional vocabulary as a singer-songwriter is at the core of the band’s sound. Consisting of bassist Nicholas Thompson-Brown, drummer Alex Ouellette, lead guitarist Jimmy Dority, and lead vocal and rhythm guitarist Anthony Branca, Modern Friendship plays songs that confront the intimate battlegrounds of young adulthood in the 2020s.
